2010 school and student competition
Act now for a Happy Planet: BankMed's Greenest School and Green Students.
Competition: Protecting Lebanon's Environment.
PURPOSE
According to worldwide experts; Climate on Earth is changing caused mainly by Deforestation, CO2 Emissions, un-recycled waste, Consumed Energy and Pollution.
The United Nations (COPENHAGEN 2010) are calling World Leaders to work out a new climate deal and World Citizens to respect the environment by planting trees, reducing, CO 2 emissions, recycling, consuming differently, saving water.
For this purpose and in line with its environmental campaign BankMed is launching a school/student competition to increase awareness among students and create a new environmental responsibility among the Lebanese Youth.

THE GREENEST SCHOOL COMPETITION
Under the theme: “REDUCING THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF THE SCHOOL”. Participants must make concrete efforts towards reducing the environmental impact of their school during the whole period of the competition using these activities as the beginning of a long term commitment.

Schools will be selected: Based on the schools concrete efforts, and, undertaken projects to improve the school’s environment.
Schools must submit a report of the school’s actions to save energy, reduce waste, prevent deforestation and on the methods applied to raise awareness among students (does the school encourage students to a green behaviour? Does the school explain the dangers of global warming, deforestation? Does the school recycle? Does the school save energy? Does the school plant trees? Does the school teach the values and importance of our cultural heritage). The school must make a commitment and act to go green during the competition period and on a long term period in order to deserve to be awarded Lebanon’s Greenest School prize.

The main judging categories are:
  • Trees planted.
  • Garbage reduced, recycled and reused.
  • Water saved.
  • Energy saved.
  • Number of people involved/impacted.
  • Innovative quality of actions and ideas.
  • Changes in the school

THE GREEN STUDENT COMPETITION
Under the theme: Lebanon’s environment is in danger: Waste/ Deforestation/ Water shortage/ Pollution of Air and Sea/ Cultural Heritage/ chaotic constructions on the shores are major problems that Lebanon’s environment is facing. This is an opportunity for students to focus and think about their surrounding environment and to find out what are the most important environmental problems faced by their city/ town/village.

“WITH YOUR (IDEAS AND) ACTIONS HELP US REDUCE THESE PROBLEMS TO MAKE OUR COUNTRY AN ENVIRONMENTALLY SAFER AND MORE PLEASANT PLACE TO LIVE.”

Students will be selected based on the submitted; essays, drawings, and ideas on the “best found solutions and best proposed projects” or the “best achieved projects” (before/ after) in the surrounding environments of their schools.

Honorary Prize of the Jury: Al Hadi Institute for the Deaf & Blind

North:
Greenest School in the North: Rawdat el Haifa'a College (for their numerous projects and particularly for the Students' study on Naher Abou Ali)
Special Prize of the Jury for outstanding achievement: David Karam Educational Center Al koura
Special Prize of the Jury for outstanding achievement: Al Hajj Kousha Public School

South:
Greenest School in the South: Public Middle School of Saida
Special Prize of the Jury for outstanding achievement: Public Middle School of Tayrdebba
Special Prize of the Jury for outstanding achievement: Elementary Public School of Ain El Heloue

Bekaa:
Greenest School of the Bekaa: Salim Haidar Public Middle School , Bednayel – Baalback
Special Prize of the Jury for outstanding achievement: Lebanese Canadian School , Rachaya
Special Prize of the Jury for outstanding achievement: College du Christ Roi des Soeurs Basiliennes, Zahle

1st Prize: Joseph Lteif, Karl Nehme, Georges Assaf, Mohammad Chami, Ghadi Freiha and Roy Saad for their group project "La Pollution Maritime" College St Gregoire (affiliated school to Notre Dame de Jamhour) Beirut
2nd Prize: Students from EB5 Class Marj El Toufoula School for their book on glass recycling (we will have the exact names of the students who have worked on this project today).
2nd equal: Miss Rana bou Jaber for her Poem, Baakline Middle School.
3d Prize: Salim Tawk & Mazen Chaghoury , Sainte Famille School, Miziara for the power point presentation on Lebanon's water.
3d Prize equal: Amani el Halabi for her drawing, Al Irfan School Al Basatin

1st Prize: Mary Lynn Chedid and Rayan Assaf Central College of the Lebanese Monks for their project with pictures on Lebanon's environmental problems and proposed solutions
2d Prize: Yasmine Ankoury, Siba Younes, Mohammad Raka, Zeina Mokahal for their study of Lebanon's environment , Al Ahliah School, Beirut
3d Prize: Haidar Abdel Ghani al Bayouni for his drawing , Hassan Hamad Ghandour School / Nabatiyeh
